Deep Research: The AI tool that’s so good it makes me concerned for my job.
There's a new productivity tool promising to cut hours out of your work week released almost every minute and they range from brilliant to baffling, so each week Caffeine will bring you the tools we’re finding truly useful.
Deep Research from OpenAI is one of those tools that’s so good it makes me genuinely concerned for my job. As I wrote for a recent column, it’s OpenAI's most impressive recent product, which is capable of deeply thoughtful, well referenced and detailed analysis of virtually any topic.
I've used it to prepare briefings in minutes on topics that would still take me hours if not a whole day to prepare on my own.
It’s only available on OpenAI’s ‘Plus’ tier and above currently and is limited to 10 queries a month on the lower tier, so you have to make your questions count but with tactical use of that, you can get some impressive results for USD $20 a month.
It’s a wildly impressive product on its own but Chat GPT 5 is on the horizon, which promises to combine all the existing functionality of OpenAI’s products in a more comprehensive suite.
I think getting familiar with how to get the best results out of Deep Research now as a more stand alone service is a wise investment of time and money. It’s the kind of functionality that makes you glimpse a future or either radical productivity or radical redundancy. Let’s do our bit to make sure it’s the former.
