Coming up on Caffeine:
The hydrogen aviation opportunity: I’ve interviewed Fabrum’s Mark Hoskins about their recent world first, successfully testing refuelling of a composite fuel tank inside a hydrogen aircraft at Christchurch Airport.
He talks about how hydrogen is tracking on its way to being a multi-billion dollar industry, the case for it in aviation and the challenges of making last month’s breakthrough.
Mark also looks at the natural advantages New Zealand has in hydrogen aviation.
There’s both a carrot and stick in the case for decarbonising, with the growing need to reduce emissions to meet all sorts of targets, and an opportunity for businesses to position themselves as leaders based on their sustainability profile.
Broaden this out, and you can see how hydrogen aviation sits nicely within New Zealand’s brand as a country, both from an environmental sense and in terms of our innovation ecosystem.
Here’s a little something to say, ‘we love you all’!

Event: I Wish I Knew with James Sampson: Yes, I know we only spoke about this yesterday but it’ll no doubt be a highlight of our week next week so I can hardly leave it out of today’s preview. These are the things you should know about it:
About James
James Sampson has lived the startup rollercoaster. He cut his teeth co-founding Zyber, a Deloitte Fast 50 web agency, before diving headfirst into SaaS. Out of sheer frustration with chasing documents came FileInvite, a simple idea that’s grown into a global platform making secure document collection easy for businesses everywhere. Along the way he’s won awards, raised capital, exited companies and weathered the kind of “will this even work?” moments every founder knows too well. James brings an honest and insightful perspective on building, scaling, and proving that global SaaS companies can be built right here in New Zealand.
Who it’s for
Our I Wish I Knew series is about real talk with founders who’ve been in the trenches. They’ve taken hits, made tough calls, and still turned up the next day.
If you’re a founder, part of an early-stage team, or a leader who’s serious about growth, this is for you. Expect the kind of lessons you only learn by doing (and sometimes by getting wrong first).
Date and time
Thu, Nov 13 from 5:15pm to 7pm
Location
1 Albert Street, Auckland
That’s it for today, thanks for reading. Want to get in touch with a news tip, bit of feedback or just to chat? Email hello@caffeinedaily.co. Look after yourselves this weekend and we’ll see you Monday.
